Meet the 2 legged Athletes

It takes a whole team to win the world's last great race. Here you can meet the human stars of Martin Buser's Happy Trails Kennels.

Martin Buser

Born in Winterthur, Switzerland in 1958, Martin Buser became fascinated with sled dogs while still a teen. He came to Alaska in 1979 to enhance his knowledge of care and training of sled dogs and began running the Iditarod in 1980.

Rohn Buser

Rohn Buser was born and raised at Happy Trails Kennel.  He is currently the Trainer for all of our pups born during the summer of 2013 and is working with Martin to train the adult racing dogs.

In the summer season, Rohn is a Primary Tour Guide at Happy Trails Kennel.

Rohn finished the 2008 and 2012 Iditarods and competed in the KUSKO 300 race four times, winning that race in 2012.

Rohn is an intergral part of the kennel operation year round.  He builds his sleds and contiues to work on innovations for racing and dog training.

Elliot Anderson

Elliot's family taught him a love of the outdoors; camping, fishing, canoeing, backpacking, hunting, were the things he did on family vacations. He grew up in Milton, Wisconsin and always dreamed of going somewhere with mountains.

Alan Stevens

I was raised in Sugar Land, Texas, a suburb of Houston. Upon graduating high school, I participated in a NOLS trip to the Wind River Range, where I developed a foundation in rock climbing, backpacking, and outdoor leadership. Soon after, I moved to Golden, Colorado to pursue a degree in engineering from the Colorado School of Mines. While there, I worked as a bike mechanic and trip leader, guiding students and faculty on backcountry adventures. I continued climbing and exploring both domestically and internationally throughout college. After graduating, I moved to Alaska in May of 2013. I worked for a summer as a dog handler on the Mendenhall glacier before joining the Happy Trails crew in Big Lake. I'm very grateful to work with Martin and his family in such a beautiful place.
