Winter exists at Lake Louise, Alaska where the dog teams have relocated to do some final training runs before the race start on March 7. Thanks to Nancy Marty and Jim Davis for setting up a dog camp and taking care of Martin, Rohn and Alan when they are not on the trail.
This might be the tip of the iceberg for the new normal. Not only has the race course changed but also has our training conditions over the last few years. What used to be the snow belt has recently become the ice and rain belt. This makes training for long distance events more and more difficult in the Big Lake. When 4 wheelers and treadmills become part of the norm, one has to be extremely dedicated to the sport to train up a great team to compete in the Iditarod.
